8th Division had played their part in the fighting around Ypres when they took part in the Battle of Langemarck in August 1917, but by October of that year they had been withdrawn from that arena and were holding the line a bit further south opposite Frelinghien, between Armentières and Ploegsteert. On 5th October, 1917, 2nd Middlesex of 23 Brigade were out of the line at Pont de Nieppe, undergoing training, when the enemy shelled their billets, causing considerable death and destruction. Seven men, including Reginald Elliott, were killed and another twenty seven were wounded.
